Alberto Burri's biography, especially his traumatic experiences during fascism, are the starting point for his artistic work: Born in Città di Castello in Umbria, he first studied medicine and then practised as a military doctor during the Second World War. In 1943 his unit was captured in Tunisia and Burri was sent to a prison camp in Hereford, Texas. After his return to Italy in 1946, Alberto Burri gave up medicine to work exclusively as an artist. He uses everyday materials such as gold leaf, iron, lacquer, jute or plastic to process his war experiences. He experiments with new techniques, assembles, welds and shapes his pictures into spatial bodies. He likes to work in series, which he names after the respective materials or processes. Internationally, he is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. In 2016, the Kunstsammlung NRW and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York are organising a retrospective of his work

Erläuterungen

Alberto Burris Biographie, insbesondere seine traumatischen Erlebnisse während des Faschismus sind der Ausgangspunkt für sein künstlerisches Schaffen: Geboren im umbrischen Città di Castello, studiert er zunächst die Medizin und praktiziert anschliessend als Militärarzt im Zweiten Weltkrieg. 1943 wird seine Einheit in Tunesien gefangen genommen und Burri kommt in ein Gefangenenlager in Hereford, Texas. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Italien 1946 gibt Alberto Burri die Medizin auf, um ausschliesslich als Künstler tätig zu sein. Mit Alltagsmaterialien wie Blattgold, Eisen, Lack, Jute oder Plastik verarbeitet er seine Kriegserfahrungen. Er experimentiert mit neuen Techniken, montiert, schweisst, formt seine Bilder zu Raumkörpern. Dabei arbeitet er gerne in Serien, die er nach den jeweiligen Materialien oder Verfahren benennt. International zählt er zu den einflussreichsten Künstlern des 20. Jahrhundert. 2016 richtet ihm die Kunstsammlung NRW und die Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York eine Retrospektive aus
