    Comments

Cy Twombly was one of the important representatives of American Abstract Expressionism. He unmistakably combined abstract painting with fine, but very expressive, scriptural drawings. He uses his unique, sign-like language in various techniques. Drawing in particular occupies a special place, Twombly himself once said that his "medium" was the pencil rather than wet paint. One also likes to speak of fleeting gestures and his unique "écriture automatique". The work offered here has comic-like features, such as implied speech bubbles or animal figures on a bicycle and unicycle; the pyramid-like composition in turn becomes a kind of figure. It is not possible to carry out an actual analysis of the work, since the drawing can only be grasped synthetically and as a whole, and even the signature becomes part of the overall structure. A very poetic, finely structured work from the 1960s, created in Rome
