    Comments

The restrained use of color plays a decisive role in Scully's works, as it reflects the artist's intention, both literally and figuratively, to depict intensity and emotionality in a holistic way. The colour is built up layer by layer with a clearly visible brushstroke and always allows the background to resonate, sometimes consciously, sometimes unconsciously. The contours of the geometric surfaces run out; it is not "hard edge" painting at the moment. The application of paint is also considered to be deliberately "rough" from a craftsman's point of view, and the gestural style is thus deliberately uneven. Armin Zweite writes in his 1993 essay: "This is of course intentional, since in this way Scully succeeds in preserving the remnants of unobjective spontaneity in the apparently perfect imperfection of his surfaces [...]. The work offered here with two "insets", i.e. two smaller canvases inserted into a larger canvas, vibrates in a restrained colour spectrum from white to black, whereby beige, ochre and red tones always resonate through the layers. A wonderful composition by the important pioneer of a new geometric abstraction
