    Comments

The sheet was commissioned by the publisher, book and art dealer Hans Goltz in Munich in the context of his exhibitions on the subject of "War" in 1914 and 1915. The sheet, created in 1916 during Klee's conscription call to military service, was originally called "Erobertes Fort", most likely referring to the battles before Verdun in the spring of 1916, but was renamed "Zerstörung und Hoffnung" after the failed breakthrough. In his own handwritten notes, Stinnes still retains the first title "Erobertes Fort"
