On thin, gray wove paper, fresh colors, not varnished. With small damages in the lower edge and with traces of an old museum mounting on the reverse
Richard Kendall points out that the pastel was first published in his book "Degas Landscapes". He writes: "Landscape at Louveciennes" is a previously unpublished and entirely unexpected image that has few precedents in Degas' career. Starkly suburban in subject, it appears to depict newly constructed houses with crisp, geometric garden walls, built at the margin where town and country intersect. As in the rest of this family of images, Degas has established a high horizon and exploited the broad, pattern-making qualities of the subject "
