Chagall was able to leave Vitebsk via St. Petersburg in 1922, and stayed in Berlin for a few months before traveling to Paris, where he met Ambroise Vollard. Vollard commissioned Chagall to begin the illustration work on Jean de la Fontaine's "Fables", but the project was not completed during Vollard's lifetime. During Ambroise Vollard's lifetime, all of the planned sheets were printed out between 1927 and 1930, but remained where they were. Vollard died in a car accident in 1939. Tériade acquired all of Chagall's preparatory work and graphic work after 1945 and published the book in 1952. The present is a complete special edition, the etchings in the two text volumes all colored by the artist and with a third volume with the 100 etchings in black and white. In this form one of only 45 copies with a total circulation of 200

Erläuterungen

Chagall konnte 1922 aus Witebsk über St. Petersburg ausreisen, und hielt sich für einige Monate in Berlin auf bevor er nach Paris reiste, wo er Ambroise Vollard kennen lernte. Vollard beauftragte Chagall mit den Vorarbeiten zur Illustration zu Jean de la Fontaines "Fables" zu beginnen, doch das Projekt ist zu Lebzeiten Vollards nicht vollendet worden. Zu Ambroise Vollards Lebzeiten wurden alle vorgesehenen Blätter in den Jahren 1927 bis 1930 ausgedruckt, blieben aber liegen. Vollard starb 1939 durch einen Autounfall. Tériade erwarb nach 1945 alle Vorarbeiten und graphischen Arbeiten von Chagall und gab das Buch 1952 heraus.
