In his late monumental works Marc Chagall combined the simultaneous narrative strands he had prepared in his early works into one complex pictorial story. As in a movie the spectators are able to compose their own way through the picture. "Le village en fête", almost pointillistic in style, is one of his major late works, painted when he was 94. In its use of transparent layers of paint it is also reminiscent of his stained glass windows
