Often classified as a representative of German Neo-Expressionism, Per Kirkeby's stylistic orientation, which employs both figurative and abstract forms, goes much deeper. His true interest was in nature, so it is not surprising that the work of Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) and his numerous depictions of Montagne Sainte-Victoire had a lasting influence on him: "I believe that Cézanne makes a connection in the way he speaks of the insight into Nature that one achieves later in life, which is also an insight into the nature of the picture (...) The picture, too, is nature. The forces that pile up in Mont Sainte-Victoire are no different from those that organize the picture. Perhaps, this is why his last pictures are built up like a hewn stone wall" (P. Kirkeby, Håndbog, Borgen 1991, p. 150).
The free linework and the combination of various painting techniques, such as wax crayon and gouache, are highly characteristic of the artist's works on paper from the 1980s.

Rückseitig Spuren einer alten Montierung. In ausgezeichneter, farbfrischer Erhaltung
I believe that Cézanne makes a connection in the way he speaks of the insight into Nature that one achieves later in life, which is also an insight into the nature of the picture (...) The picture, too, is nature. The forces that pile up in Mont Sainte-Victoire are no different from those that organize the picture. Perhaps, this is why his last pictures are built up like a hewn stone wall" (P. Kirkeby, Håndbog, Borgen 1991, S. 150).
