Tristan Tzara, the founder of the Dada movement, structured his work „L'homme approximatif“, which is considered his main work due to its flowing, powerful language, into 19 cantos. Surreal stylistic devices characterize the lyrical sections. For example, in the first canto, human nerves are depicted as whips in the hands of time. Furthermore, the poet succeeds in creating a striking image between Surrealism and Dadaism with the figurative expression of the „eingesperrte Tränen“. Paul Klee provided a frontispiece of the same name for „L'homme approximatif“, in which the face of the approximate man appears only vaguely at the left edge of the image, thus visually implementing the surrounding, suggestive language.
