The years 1964, 1965, and 1966 occupy a central place in Bonalumi’s artistic career. On the one hand, his works received increasing recognition from renowned galleries and institutions. For example, Arturo Schwarz dedicated a solo exhibition to him in Milan in 1965, while the Galleria del Naviglio, directed by Renato Cardazzo, presented a total of seven solo shows between 1966 and 1974. Bonalumi’s participation in the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966 also confirmed his significant role within the Italian art scene. On the other hand, during this period he developed his characteristic artistic language: the padded tondo with the navel-like indentation at its centre became his iconic motif. Characteristic features are the precisely executed seams, the evenly protruding bulges, and the carefully applied monochrome paint. Bonalumi’s works expand the boundaries of traditional painting, resulting in reliefs with a fascinating interplay of light and shadow.
