    Commentaires

Characteristic of Max Bill’s work is the precise engagement with form and proportion, with mathematical structures having developed into a central design element. In his compositions, Bill used polygonal surfaces, which he assembled into balanced yet dynamic pictorial structures. The present painting is a particularly successful example of this. Four square surfaces set at an angle form the compositional core and are complemented by eight adjoining isosceles right-angled triangles. Through this clear geometric construction, a harmonious interplay between the surfaces and the colours emerges. The finely tuned palette of grey, white, pink, and blue lends the composition an impressive lightness and elegance.
