    Commentaires

Since the 1960s, James Bishop developed an independent visual language in which materiality, painting process, and surface are central. As in the paintings created between 1964 and 1987, he also applies oil paint here in fine layers. For Bishop, painting was a physical process that manifests itself in subtle overlays of color and structure. In the present work, he created a reduced composition using earthy tones as well as horizontal, vertical, and diagonal brushstrokes and pencil lines. The transparent layer of color generates a tense relationship between surface and pictorial depth. Thus, the work oscillates between abstraction and the memory of the representational, connecting influences of American postwar painting with the rich tradition of European painting.
