Condition

On the original stretcher, in the old nailing. Slightly rubbed by the frame at the picture edge, with paint loss at the lower centre. The generally very thin paint layer allows the canvas to show through. In very good condition

Commentaires

The painting, which is described as an oil sketch in the catalogue raisonné, is a rediscovery. The existence of the work was known to researchers, but neither its measurements, its depiction, nor its current location could be determined. It was created during Édouard Vallet's trip to Italy in 1905, when he produced various detailed views of the city of Chioggia, a port city on the Adriatic in the Italian region of Veneto. This landscape-format work is the only one in the series to show a panoramic view of the city.

Erläuterungen

Das Gemälde, das im Werkkatalog als Ölskizze bezeichnet wird, ist eine Wiederentdeckung. Die Existenz des Werkes war der Forschung bekannt, jedoch konnten weder die Masse, die Darstellung noch der aktuelle Standort ermittelt werden. Es entstand während Édouard Vallets Italienreise im Jahr 1905, als er verschiedene Detailansichten der Stadt Chioggia, einer Hafenstadt an der Adria in der italienischen Region Venetien, herstellte. Dieses querformatige Werk zeigt als einziges dieser Serie eine Panorama-Ansicht der Stadt.
