Commentaires

The present letter, written on the letterhead of Villa La Hune in Saint-Tropez, is addressed to Jean Grave, the editor of the anarchist magazine Les temps nouveaux. Paul Signac reports that he is working on a "Démolisseur", which he intends to create as a large-format decorative vertical composition. Inserted as a vignette in the letter text is a small colored hand drawing, which in composition and the figure's posture is already closely related to the lithograph of 1896, the study, and the completed painting in the Musée d'Orsay.

Der vorliegende Brief, auf dem Briefpapier der Villa La Hune in Saint-Tropez verfasst, richtet sich an Jean Grave, den Herausgeber der anarchistischen Zeitschrift Les temps nouveaux. Paul Signac teilt mit, dass er an einem "Démolisseur" arbeite, den er als grossformatiges dekoratives Hochformat zu gestalten gedenke. Als Vignette in den Brieftext eingefügt findet sich eine kleine farbige Handzeichnung, die in Komposition und Haltung der Figur bereits eng mit der Lithografie von 1896, der Studie sowie dem ausgeführten Gemälde im Musée d'Orsay verwandt ist.
