Commentaires

The sheet comes from the group of 15 drawings that Odilon Redon created for the illustrations of Gustave Flaubert's book "La Tentation de saint Antoine". In addition to the 24-part lithograph series, the book itself was also to be illustrated with woodcuts. Subsequently, the motif was realized in sheet XV "Voici la bonne-déesse, l'indienne des montagnes" (Mellerio 148). Redon handed over the 15 preparatory drawings to the publisher Ambroise Vollard. Except for the title page, 14 of them went into an American collection and were auctioned in Bern in 1974. Thematically, the sheet belongs to the series of "Yeux clos", the women with closed eyes, which point to the transcendental. A very finely executed work.

Erläuterungen

Das Blatt stammt aus der Gruppe von 15 Zeichnungen, die Odilon Redon für die Illustrationen von Gustave Flauberts Buch "La Tentation de saint Antoine" schuf. Neben der 24-teiligen Lithografienfolge sollte das Buch selbst mit Holzschnitten illustriert werden. In der Folge wurde das Motiv im Blatt XV "Voici la bonne-déesse, l'indienne des montagnes" (Mellerio 148) umgesetzt. Redon übergab die 15 vorbereitenden Zeichnungen dem Verleger Ambroise Vollard. Bis auf das Titelblatt kamen 14 davon in eine amerikanische Sammlung und wurden 1974 bei der Auktion in Bern versteigert. Thematisch steht das Blatt in der Reihe der "Yeux clos", der Frauen mit geschlossenen Augen, die auf das Transzendentale hinweisen. Eine sehr schön ausgearbeitete Arbeit.
