In 1905, Adolf Hölzel was appointed to the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, and he succeeded in making the breakthrough to abstract painting. Among his students were, among others, Willi Baumeister, Johannes Itten, and Oskar Schlemmer. After his retirement in 1919, Hölzel lived in his house in Stuttgart-Degerloch until his death in 1934. Here, he created an extensive late body of work, which also includes the pastel offered here, a splendidly colourful composition from around 1920.
