On the original stretcher, in old nailing, with minimal craquelures in places. In very good condition
Ferdinand Hodler presented the work offered here in 1914 at the Kunsthaus Zürich under the title "Mädchenkopf". He later dated the painting to 1881, presumably on the occasion of its acquisition by Fritz Meyer-Fierz at that exhibition. In the catalogue raisonné, Carl Albert Loosli referred to the sitter as "Savoyerin". Jura Brüschweiler later identified the portrayed woman as the same model Hodler had already used in 1879/80 for the two paintings "Die Überfahrt zur Kirche" (Bätschmann/Müller nos. 1090 And 1091). This finding suggests that the present portrait was created in 1880.
The young woman can be recognized in the two works mentioned as the second figure from the left. Dressed in black mourning clothes, she sits quietly and introspectively during the crossing of the Aare to the church of Scherzligen, her gaze thoughtfully directed at the water.

In sehr guter Erhaltung
