Commentaires

The drawing was probably created in 1906 in Gósol, a remote mountain village in the Pyrenees, where Picasso spent the summer from mid-May to mid-August with Fernande Olivier, his companion at the time. Far from Paris and accessible only after a long, complicated journey, the artist was able to fully concentrate on his artistic work in the hamlet. During this period, nearly 300 sketches were produced. After the circus pictures of the previous year, classical nudes, especially youths and women, became the main theme of that summer.

In the present drawing, Picasso's affinity at the time for ancient concepts of beauty and the ideal of the human figure is evident in the simplification and sublimation of the line.

Leichter Lichtrand im alten Passepartoutausschnitt, sauber in der Erhaltung

Erläuterungen

Die Zeichnung dürfte 1906 in Gósol, einem abgelegenen Bergdorf in den Pyrenäen, entstanden sein, in dem Picasso den Sommer von Mitte Mai bis Mitte August mit Fernande Olivier, seiner damaligen Lebensgefährtin, verbrachte. Weit ab von Paris und nur nach einer langen, umständlichen Anreise erreichbar, konnte sich der Künstler in dem Weiler vollends auf seine künstlerische Tätigkeit konzentrieren. In dieser Zeit entstanden annähernd 300 Skizzen. Nach den Zirkusbildern des Vorjahres wurden klassische Akte, vor allem Jünglinge und Frauen, zum Hauptthema dieses Sommers.

In der vorliegenden Zeichnung wird Picassos damalige Affinität zu antiken Vorstellungen von Schönheit und dem Ideal der menschlichen Figur in der Vereinfachung und der Sublimierung der Linie deutlich.
