    Commentaires

Marc Chagall never understood religion as a narrowly defined system, but was always eager to explore and expand ideological boundaries. He was also interested in the custom of Santa Claus, which he interpreted artistically in various works. In his compositions, he thematically wove together the topos of the wandering Jew with the motif of the fleeing, shelter-seeking family.

In the 1950s, Eberhard W. Kornfeld would dress up as Saint Nicholas each year on December 6th, wearing a red robe and long white beard, and visit families in the old town of Bern. He brought gifts and sweets to many people in need and friends. Among those visited were also the three children of Franz Meyer, the director of the Kunsthalle in Bern, who worked and lived in Bern from 1955 to 1961. Meyer was married to Marc Chagall’s daughter Ida. The visits by Ebi to Herrengasse 23 in Bern remained fondly remembered by all. Such a visit is likely the reason why Chagall gave the present sheet to Kornfeld. It is an anecdotal testimony to their long friendship.
