Two small tears in the lower margin. The paper slightly browned. In very good condition
Edvard Munch created 'Drei Gesichter. Tragödie' in two versions. Once in 1902 as a reworked aquatint (see lot 849) and once in 1913 as a woodcut. The depiction shows the face of a woman on the left and two male heads on the right. It is about the loss of a relationship: the woman leaves one man in favour of the other. Themes such as unrequited love or separation are regularly found in Munch's works.
The present woodcut from 1913 is designed in a more block-like, expressive manner. The heads are more stylised, the forms more angular and the surface more dominant. The coarse grain of the wood makes the scene less individual, but more iconic.
Both versions address tragedy not as an external event, but as an inner state. A comparison of the two reveals Munch's masterful command of technique and his inexhaustible ability to explore different emotional depths with the same motifs. The very rare woodcut was printed by Munch himself in only a few copies.
An amicable agreement was reached with the heirs of Curt Glaser, represented by the Berlin law firm 'S+N Rechtsanwälte'. The current sale is taking place with the consent of the heirs of Curt Glaser and is therefore free from any claims. The amicable agreement has been recorded in the Lost Art Database of the German Lost Art Foundation.

Zwei kleine Einrisse im unteren Rand. Das Papier leicht gebräunt. In sehr guter Erhaltung
"Drei Gesichter. Tragödie" schuf Edvard Munch in zwei Fassungen.
