The Linde Portfolio by Edvard Munch is an important group of works that the Norwegian artist began around 1902 for his friend and patron, the Lübeck ophthalmologist and art collector Dr Max Linde. It is an intimate and personal collection of impressions from the life of the Linde family and from the 'Lindeschen Villa', the family estate in Lübeck. According to Gustav Schiefler, only 13 portfolios were produced for the collector and there was no individual sale of the sheets. All plates and stones remained in the possession of the Linde family. In 1921, on the advice of Paul Cassirer, individual sheets were reprinted in an unknown edition.
The portfolio documents Munch's close connection to his collectors as well as his mastery of printmaking techniques. The preservation of the cover is particularly noteworthy. A complete portfolio is extremely rare; the example offered here is probably one of the last still in private hands. The etchings were printed in 1906 by Wilhelm Felsing and the lithographs at Lassally in Berlin.
