    Commentaires

The woodcut is based on Edvard Munch's etching of the same name from 1895 (Woll no. 23), as well as the oil painting 'Der Kuss' from 1897, which is now in the Munch Museum in Oslo. Although Munch never met Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) in person, he was significantly influenced and inspired by Rodin's sculptures, such as 'Der Kuss'. From 1895 onwards, Munch developed the theme further into four woodcuts (Woll 114, 115, 124 and 204) of the same title; see lot 821. The woodcut offered here is the fourth variant of the theme and excellently demonstrates Munch's working method: he cut the woodblock into two parts and printed them individually or in combination with a second base block. He sometimes rotated the base block, resulting in a slightly altered perspective. This can be seen by the knot holes, which are located at the left or right edge. Munch also worked with the wood grain and deliberately incorporated it into the composition. For the present woodcut, he used spruce wood, which displays even stronger grain. A wonderful impression of this important sheet.
