    Commentaires

This lithograph shows a group of silently mourning figures gathered around an implied deathbed. Although death is physically absent, it is emotionally omnipresent. Munch has condensed his personal experience of losing of his mother and sister into a universal image of silent despair. Through its spatial arrangement and depiction of isolated figures in an empty space, the work becomes a symbol of grief, powerlessness and inner withdrawal (see also lots 805 and 960).

An early impression before the edition of 30 copies, printed by Auguste Clot in Paris.
