The sheet was printed by Sabo and bears an ink signature, which Munch generally used for his very early prints. There are only very few impressions of this sheet, and in this condition it is of great rarity.

'Madonna' (also called 'Liebendes Weib') is a motif that Edvard Munch worked on between 1894 and 1897 in five paintings and three graphic works (see also lot 781). The Norwegian writer Dagny Juel (1867-1901) is considered the model for this group of works. The title and composition are in some ways reminiscent of classical depictions of the Madonna. Thematically, the subject belongs to Munch’s 'Lebensfries', a compilation of his central works on the themes of life, love and death.

An amicable agreement was reached with the heirs of Curt Glaser, represented by the Berlin law firm 'S+N Rechtsanwälte'. The current sale is taking place with the consent of the heirs of Curt Glaser and is therefore free of any claims. The amicable agreement has been recorded in the Lost Art Database of the German Lost Art Foundation.
