    Commentaires

The painting shows a restrained, almost melancholic view of a suburb in the Paris area. The Butte Pinson—a low hill in Montmagny north of Paris—was a popular motif for Utrillo at the beginning of the 20th century. It offered him a quiet, almost timeless scene away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Stylistically, the work belongs to the so-called "Période blanche", in which he worked with a reduced, almost chalky palette. White, grey, and ochre tones predominate. In this phase, Utrillo developed his unmistakable visual language: quiet, melancholic city and village landscapes, characterized by empty streets, simple houses, and an almost ascetic use of colour.
