Otto Dix repeatedly portrayed his parents, with whom he maintained a warm relationship throughout his life. Up to her death, 21 portraits of his mother Louise Dix-Amann (1863-1953) are known. The present bust-length portrait impresses with its strong use of color and distinctive line work. It served as the model for two lithographs.
