With traces of old mounting on the reverse. Fresh in colour and in impeccable condition
The gouache is a striking example of Hans Arp’s organically abstract formal language. On a surface in muted grey, amorphous islands of colour in luminous blue float, within which white forms appear like enclosed bodies or inner movements. The composition appears both playful and deliberately arranged and possesses a visual balance that requires no symmetry.
The reduction to three colours—grey, blue and white—intensifies the effect of the image as a meditative surface. Arp did not use colour for modelling or illusion, but as an autonomous force that carries the form.
