Commentaires

In the present watercolour, Anker depicts a typical representation of a pipe-smoking, reading farmer from the Seeland region. Although the portrait appears lifelike, the artist was less concerned with painting a specific person than with showing the image of a farmer engaged in a tranquil activity. The person depicted was certainly important, but Anker allowed himself to typify them (In: Sandor Kuthy, Albert Anker 1831-1910, Das künstlerische Werk, in: Ausstellungskatalog Seedamm-Kulturzentrum Pfäffikon SZ, Bern 1991, p. 16).

Erläuterungen

Anker stellt auf dem vorliegenden Aquarell eine typische Darstellung eines Pfeife rauchenden, lesenden Bauern aus dem Seeland dar. Obwohl das Bildnis porträthaft wirkt, ging es dem Künstler weniger darum, eine bestimmte Person zu malen, als vielmehr das Bild eines Bauern bei einer geruhsamen Beschäftigung zu zeigen. Die wiedergegebene Person war gewiss wichtig, doch Anker erlaubte sich, sie zu typisieren (In: Sandor Kuthy, Albert Anker 1831-1910, Das künstlerische Werk, in: Ausstellungskatalog Seedamm-Kulturzentrum Pfäffikon SZ, Bern 1991, S. 16).
