    Commentaires

This composition was inspired by the preliminary drawings for the paintings 'Composition - figure d'homme ou spirale logarithmique' (WVZ 94) from 1929 and 'Nature morte à l'accordéon' (WVZ 56) from 1926. Between 1942 and 1950, Le Corbusier revisited the theme and created various versions.

The motif of this gouache consists of the figure of a man in the form of a profile mask, looking upward with wide-open eyes and mouth, above a still life from 1926. This still life, with elements that are difficult to identify, stands on a pedestal that carries a vertical plate. It is framed on the left by a skyscraper-like form from which smoke escapes, and on the right by a vertically standing support on which the still life appears to rest.
