    Commentaires

Irène Staub (1952-1989), also known as Lady Shiva, was one of the most dazzling figures in Zurich during the 1970s and 1980s. She was a muse to various artists, a fashion icon and a prostitute. In 1980, Franz Gertsch painted her as his first large-format, pure female portrait, following the images of Patti Smith and his iconic self-portrait. She was followed by Tabea (see lot 130), Verena, Christina and finally Johanna. The present 'Irène I', the first portrait on paper, was also created in 1981; the same year that he produced further works with the same model. All these works were created in gouache, but in different formats.

The watercolour is closely based on the large acrylic painting. The model looks directly at the viewer with incredible directness and determination. Unlike the painting and later versions, this work on paper is painted in subdued colours and in a slightly pointillist manner. It is one of the very rare works on paper and impressively demonstrates the artist's incomparable mastery.

We thank the Gertsch family for their valuable information regarding this work.
