Commentaires

Marc Chagall's fascination with the circus probably dates back to his childhood in Vitebsk, when he saw travelling troupes performing in the village square. For the artist, the circus quickly became one of the 'metaphors of life', a theme that would influence his work throughout his career. Here, we see a highly graphic version of the circus motif: the 'Écuyère' (horsewoman), surrounded by acrobats, clowns and a partly upside-down audience, dominates the scene, admired by all. In the foreground, a dominant figure in profile presents a colourful bouquet of flowers as a sign of joie de vivre and inspirational connection, framing the scene. The composition is incredibly richly designed - a colourful firework full of vitality and zest for life that impressively illustrates Chagall's constant urge for renewal well into old age.
