    Commentaires

The relationship between Dora Maar and Pablo Picasso is among the most turbulent love stories in 20th-century art. Maar, who worked as a surrealist photographer, met Picasso in Paris in 1935/1936. He was fascinated by her strong self-confidence and impressive presence. She became his constant companion and documented, among other things, the creation of his epochal painting 'Guernica' on the Spanish Civil War. After the long and bloody war, Picasso sought inspiration in his immediate surroundings in 1939. Many still lifes were created, but his main motif became his new muse Dora Maar. He portrayed her in most artistic media: painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking.

The partnership lasted almost a decade and was characterised by intellectual exchange and intense passion. Maar's influence on Picasso during these years led to some of his most iconic and daring portraits - including the aquatint 'La femme au tambourin'.

The sheet is executed in a similar tonality and nuance as 'Guernica'. Working in black, white and grey tones allowed Picasso to bring a painterly aspect to printmaking. He masterfully succeeds in particularly highlighting light and expression. The aquatint provides insight into Picasso's private life, but in its execution also opens a window onto current world events. Before the final version, the fifth state, four trial states were produced at Roger Lacourière's studio in Paris, with which the artist worked his way towards the final version. The sheet offered here is extremely rare, as only two copies are known. Of the preparatory states I to IV, it is the only one still in private hands; all other trial proofs are in the Musée Picasso in Paris.
