The left margin perforated. A stain to the right of the face and two more at the lower margin. In very fine condition
The present drawing by Amedeo Modigliani can be assigned to the group of works known as the 'Karyatiden', a series of paintings, sculptures and drawings created between 1910 and 1914. These works depict totem-like, mostly frontally presented female figures, either standing or kneeling. During this creative phase, Modigliani was strongly inspired by non-European art forms, especially African sculptures and overseas artifacts.
The present drawing is presumably a study for a sculpture. It depicts the head of a woman in a frontal view. A well-known representation of the same motif in profile (Parisot 25/10) shows clear similarities, for example in the hairstyle, the earrings and the distinctive facial features. It is conceivable that this drawing served as a preparatory study for a stone head, which is now in the collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne - Centre Pompidou (inv. no. AM 876 S).

In sehr schöner Erhaltung
