Two faint surface rubbings in the upper margin, otherwise in fine overall condition
The location depicted in the drawing is the Groothoofdspoort in Dordrecht, which is also depicted by Cuyp in three oil paintings from around 1644/45.
Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann's dating of "ca. 1645" is also confirmed by a comparison with two other drawings. "Two rowing boats on the beach with a church in the background" (private collection, Amsterdam) and "The Groothoofd landing stage in Dordrecht" (Fondation Custodia, Paris, inv. I 5258; illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Washington/London/Amsterdam, 2001-02, cat. no. 81). The first drawing is dated to ca. 1640-41 due to its connection with a painting in the Dulwich Picture Gallery (inv. DPG60); the second to 1647 as terminus ante quem, since in this year the wooden barricade on the "Joppenbolwerk" depicted there was replaced by a wall.
We would like to thank Jan Leja, who kindly provided us with this information based on the documents in the estate of Prof Haverkamp-Begemann.
J. G. van Gelder's expert opinion of 23 May 1980 also suggested a date of around 1645.

I 5258; abgebildet im Ausstellungskatalog Washington/London/Amsterdam, 2001–02, Kat. Nr. 81).
