Fine, nuanced impression from the 1st edition. Clean condition with wide margins. On the left still the stitching holes from the original binding and laid paper margin on the left and bottom

Commentaires

The Prado commentary reads: "Imagination abandoned by reason creates incredible monsters. Reason united with imagination, on the other hand, is the mother of the arts and the source of miracles." Originally intended as a prelude, Goya integrated the caption into the composition itself as a recess in the aquatint.

Schöner, nuanciert druckender Abzug von der 1. Auflage. Sauber in der Erhaltung mit breitem Rand. Links noch die Heftlöcher von der originalen Bindung und mit Büttenrand links und unten

Erläuterungen

Der Prado-Kommentar lautet: "Die von Vernunft verlassene Phantasie erschafft unglaubliche Ungeheuer. Vernunft vereint mit Phantasie ist dagegen die Mutter der Künste und der Ursprung der Wunder." Ursprünglich als Auftaktblatt vorgesehen, integrierte Goya die Bildlegende als Aussparung der Aquatinta in die Komposition selbst.
