    Commentaires

This print is one of a group of six etchings on the childhood of Jesus made in 1654, which are united by their format, style and subject. The emotions of family life are sensitively visualised. Although there have been repeated examples in art history in which the circumcision was depicted in a stable instead of the temple, the relocation of the action remains unusual. Iconologically, the ladder in the background can be read as a reference to the death on the cross, Jesus' last suffering, while the circumcision is his first.
