    Commentaires

The print is from the same book context as "The Seven Trumpet Angels" (see lot 2025). It illustrates the fourth chapter of the "Apocalypse".

The large woodcuts illustrating the "Apocalypse", created from 1497 onwards, are characterised by an almost unimaginable wealth of ideas. They were probably first printed in 1498 with the help of Dürer's godfather, the great Nuremberg printer Anton Koberger, together with a German text based on the Koberger Bible and a Latin text.
