Commentaires

To mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the artist created an edition with a double US flag. As the name suggests, the museum's collection focuses exclusively on American art.

The motif of the flags dates back to the 1950s. Johns himself wrote: "One night I dreamt that I was painting a large American flag, and the next morning I got up, went out and bought the materials to start".

Erläuterungen

Der Künstler schuf anlässlich des 50. Jahrestags der Gründung des Whitney Museum of American Art in New York eine Auflage mit doppelter Flagge der USA. Wie der Name besagt, konzentriert sich die Sammlung dieses Museums ausschliesslich auf amerikanische Kunst.

Das Motiv der Flaggen geht auf die 1950er-Jahre zurück. Johns selbst schrieb dazu: "Eines Nachts träumte ich, dass ich eine grosse amerikanische Flagge malte, und am nächsten Morgen stand ich auf, ging los und kaufte das Material, um damit zu beginnen".
