Hands have played a central role in Le Corbusier's work since the late 1920s. He commented: "The human hand is a great thing ... And then the other way of drawing hands is my own hand, as a painter or draughtsman". The hand can be found in numerous works by the artist, including drawings, gouaches, paintings and sculptures, as well as in his writings.
The present motif shows the four fingers of a left hand at the top left and its mirror image at the bottom right. The collaged scraps of paper and newspaper lend the work depth, harmony and balance.
This work is a variation of the large-format collage "Les Mains" from Heidi Weber's collection.
We would like to thank Naïma Jornod for her detailed expertise, from which we have quoted.
