    Commentaires

In August 1893, Gauguin returned to Paris from his first stay in Tahiti with numerous drawings and preparatory work for a book project. In collaboration with the writer Charles Morice, parts of the text for "NOA NOA" were written in Paris in the winter of 1893-1894. The plan was to produce a special edition with ten woodcuts of almost the same format, all of which were created in the winter of 1893-1894. After individual proofs by Gauguin, the artist entrusted the printing of the limited edition of 25 to 30 copies to his artist friend Louis Roy. The planned book was never realised; only the famous manuscript "NOA NOA" is known, which is now in the Louvre in Paris. The catalogue raisonné of prints still contains 18 copies of the Roy prints.
