    Commentaires

An early work, created in Rome in 1857. There, in the Eternal City, he must also have been interested in Dante's "Divine Comedy", which describes a journey to hell by Dante and his guide Virgil. Between 1856 and 1858, Degas reworked the motif in several drawings and two paintings and turned it into an etching reworked with drypoint. It is an exciting composition in front of the Gates of Hell. Only two prints of the first state are known to Reed/Shapiro; the other sheet is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.
