    Commentaires

The painting depicts the 17-year-old Clara Battié (1881-1951) from Geneva, who attended the École des Beaux-Arts. She was often mentioned in the press at meetings such as the "Exposition permanente" at the Palais de l'Athénée. Ferdinand Hodler had been a member of the jury of various commissions since the 1890s and supported Battié's work. Around 1904, Battié married the Vaudois painter Théo Pasche (1879-1965), who assisted Hodler in the execution of large compositions in the studio. Clara and Théo moved to Oron-la-Ville together, where they opened a studio for arts and crafts. Commissioned by the Zurich collector Fritz Meyer-Fierz, Hodler produced a replica of the present painting between 1915 and 1917 (Bätschmann/Müller no. 947).
