On cream wove paper (papier vélin), fresh colours. Upper margin with pinholes, reverse with traces of old mounting. Colour fresh and in very good overall condition
During the Second World War, from 1940 to 1945, Léger was in exile in the USA. He first taught at Yale University, later at the famous Mills College in Oakland. He returned to France in December 1945. Reminiscences of geometric abstraction can be found in many of his works, which he could have studied in the USA. He often combined abstraction with figuration, also in this very beautiful gouache from 1953.
We thank Mrs. Irus Hansma for the valuable information on this work.
