The cardboard mounted in the frame. The edges of the cardboard slightly bumped and rubbed. With minimal craquelure in the green of the background. In very good condition and fresh in colour
The present work is probably an oil study for the work of the same name, "Giovine madre" (Müller/Radlach 1910.22), which was painted in the same year. It shows a young mother with an infant breastfeeding. Giacometti showed the final version at the exhibition in the "Nemzeti Szalon" in Budapest from May to September 1910 and wrote in a letter to the Winterthur collector Richard Bühler of 18 February 1910: "These days I have completed a new picture for Budapest. A young mother with a nursing child. I think there is no other moment in life where the eternally renewing life reveals itself as much as when you see a child clinging to its mother's breast. You have to believe in life and its goodness (sic!). The picture is painted in the warmest, richest and juiciest colours, for where is life richer and where is love greater than there? And art is basically a narrative (sic!) of love. Of love and sunlight [...]." (from: Giovanni Giacometti, correspondence with his parents, friends and collectors, letter no. 427)
