A lovely example of Chagall’s artistic inventiveness: Several narrative strands unfold simultaneously on different colour planes. The artist is working on an easel placed on the ground, carrying his parents’ house – and thus his home, religion and culture – on his head. Above right, memories of Paris with the floating Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame. On the left, as if through an opening curtain, the people appear to admire the work of art

Ein wunderbares Beispiel von Chagalls künstlerischer Invention: Verschiedene Narrationsstränge werden auf unterschiedliche Farbflächen "simultan" ausgebreitet: Der Künstler arbeitet an der auf dem Boden liegenden Staffelei und trägt sein Elternhaus und somit seine Heimat, Religion und Kultur auf dem Kopf. Oben rechts die Erinnerungen an Paris, mit dem fliegenden Eiffelturm und der Kathedrale Notre Dame. Und links, wie durch einen sich öffnenden Vorhang erscheint das Volk, um das Kunstwerk zu bestaunen
