Splendid, deep black early impression, in perfect condition, with at least 1-2 mm paper margin around the fully visible, rough platemark
The fifth and last engraving of a planned but never completed series of apostles, created between 1523 and 1526. Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum emphasise the "marmorne Kühle und plastische Monumentalität" of the depiction and point out that the strictness of form is probably due to the Reformation adopted in Nuremberg in 1525
1523-1526
Kupferstich
12,2x7,6 cm, Plattenkante - 12,6x8 cm, Blattgrösse
Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum 100/a (v. c)
Meder 48/a (v. c)
Slg. Edgar und Elisabeth Paltzer, New York/Basel, Lugt online 4262
