Estate of the artist
On cream-coloured wove paper, with a small crease in the lower right-hand corner, fresh in colours and in immaculate overall condition
A circus scene illustrating the artist’s persistent fascination with the circus as a metaphor for life. In the 1950s and 1960s, his preoccupation with the topic, which he explored through a variety of techniques, intensified, culminating in 1967 after a series of preparatory gouaches, with coloured lithographs for the publication Le Cirque by Tériade Éditeurs, Paris. The use of cloth collage elements heightens the tension, hinting playfully at areas of densification from a possible transposition into another medium, and is connected to with Chagall’s close links to the stage and costume design
