Commentaires

From the 1970s onwards, Chagall produces compositions with clearly defined areas of colour as a new form of expression. He thereby wove together thematic narrative strands, while accentuating and adding dynamism to the pictorial composition. On the five painted areas showing the main protagonists he places various narrative elements: The all-illuminating moon on yellow, the entwined lovers on purple, the mystical animal with Vitebsk on beige, the lush Tree of Life with the sleeping beloved on red – and finally Chagall’s house, with his initials on the door lintel a metaphor for the all-encompassing nature of art, on brown. This is an exceptionally powerful, idiosyncratic piece of work

Erläuterungen

Als neue Ausdrucksform "erfand" Chagall für sich ab den 1970er Jahren Kompositionen, die mittels klar abgegrenzter Farbflächen aufgebaut werden. Er kann so thematische Erzählstränge bündeln, schafft aber auch eine Dynamisierung und Akzentuierung der Bildanlage. Auf den fünf Farbflächen, die einzeln auch zu Akteuren werden, setzt er verschiedene narrative Elemente: Der alles erleuchtende Mond auf Gelb, das innig umschlungene Liebespaar auf Violett, das mystische Tier mit Witebsk im Beige, der üppige Lebensbaum mit der schlafenden Geliebten auf Rot – und schliesslich Chagalls Haus, auf dessen Türsturz seine Initialen zu finden sind, als Metapher des Allumfassenden der Kunst, auf Braun. Eine äusserst kraftvolle und sehr eigenständige Arbeit
