Commentaires

Chagall travelled constantly, continuously reinventing himself. His autobiography Ma Vie ends in 1922, but life continued the story. He brings these elements into this picture with virtuosity and aplomb, juxtaposing some of the essential experiences of his life. He effectively unites Vitebsk, with its synagogue, crowned by the Star of David, with the Eiffel Tower through the use of a restrained and evocative colour palette. At upper left we see the painter, who captures sensual life with his palette. Between Vitebsk and Paris, a bouquet of flowers appears to be a gift paying tribute to the couple, while at lower left the book titled Ma Vie suggests the artist’s legacy – the house at the centre is signed Chagall

Erläuterungen

Chagall war ein ständig reisender und sich immer wieder neu erfindender Künstler. Seine Autobiographie "Ma vie" endet 1922; doch das Leben schrieb die Geschichte weiter. Diese bringt er hier konzentriert und quasi synchron mit virtuoser und zeichnerischer Qualität in das Bildgeschehen ein. Witebsk, mit der Synagoge, bekrönt mit dem Davidstern, bis hin zum Eiffelturm; alles ist in stimmungsvollen Farben gehalten. Oben rechts der Maler mit Palette, der das sinnliche Leben förmlich einfängt. Zwischen Witebsk und Paris ein Blumenstrauss, eine Hommage des Paares. Links unten als Vermächtnis das mit "Ma vie" betitelte Buch, in der Mitte das stattliche Haus, signiert mit "Chagall"
