Commentaires

Chagall had been fascinated by the circus from his early days as an artist, and he often incorporated it into his work as a metaphor for life right into his later years. The écuyère dominates the scene here, her face shown from the front and in profile above. Her patterned red dress complements the colours and forms of the figures in the floodlit arena, in the middle of which she stands triumphant. She is surrounded by other artists and the audience. The composition is unbelievably rich, a colourful display of joie de vivre

Erläuterungen

Chagall war seit seinen künstlerischen Anfängen vom Zirkus fasziniert, dessen "Metapher für das Leben" er bis ins Spätwerk oft in seine Arbeit einfliessen liess. Die "Écuyère" dominiert das Geschehen, ihr Gesicht wird einmal frontal, einmal als männliches Profil dargestellt. Ihr rotes mit vielfältigen Mustern geschmücktes Kleid bildet einen wunderbaren Kontrast zur hell gehaltenen Manege, in deren Mitte sie dominierend steht. Sie ist umringt von anderen Artisten und dem Publikum. Die Komposition ist unglaublich reich gestaltet, ein farbenprächtiges Feuerwerk, das nur so von Lebensfreude und -willen strotzt
